Utilizing a desiccant, often termed a hygroscopic material, adsorption dryers extract moisture. As compressed air passes through the desiccant, it sheds moisture. Upon saturation, the hygroscopic material undergoes regeneration, expelling and draining moisture to restore desiccant functionality.
In order to maintain constant operation of the dryer, a typical adsorption dryer is made up of two towers filled with desiccant. While one tower is drying the air, the other is being regenerated.
